Sustainability

Top Catch Fishing Charters Kaikoura - Crayfish

Kaitiakitanga - KCFAI Code of Conduct

Top Catch Charters are proud to be active members of the Kaikōura Charter Fishers Association Inc. (KCFAI), and actively practice the KCFAI Code of Conduct. The code was developed by KCFAI and Te Korowai o Te Tai ō Marokura to focus on fishing sustainably for generations to come.

A good example is that the daily limit for Crayfish according to Ministry of Primary Industries is 6 crayfish per person whereas the KCFAI have set a daily limit of only 1 Crayfish per person. This encompasses our belief that we should all fish for a feed and not to fill our freezers. This also removes unnecessary pressure on the fishery and preserves it for the future. We also educate our customers about the regulations regarding size limits and what we can and cannot take, returning any undersized or pregnant Crayfish to the sea.

Blue Cod - Top Catch Charters also have a rule that the minimum size for a Blue Cod to be kept is 35cm whereas the MPI Regulations for Kaikoura allow for 33cm fish to be kept. This allows for more fish to grow to breeding maturity which can only be good for the fishery.

Te Korowai o Te Tai o Marokura

What is Te Korowai o Te Tai ō Marokura - Stewards for the integrity of the Kaikoura marine environment.

Te Korowai is an organisation focusing on marine management strategies that incorporate Kaikoura’s coastal values and provide an ongoing kaitiakitanga (stewardship) for community stakeholders.

Our skipper and owner-operator, Malcolm, is an esteemed member and an active participant of Te Korowai o Te Tai ō Marokura. This organization is dedicated to preserving and protecting the marine environment of the Kaikōura region. Malcolm's involvement in this group demonstrates his commitment to sustainable and responsible fishing practices.
